How long have you been an artisan? How did your particular skillset develop over time?
I’ve been a full-time artist for 5 years. I’ve dabbled in a variety of media over my lifetime including woodworking, felting, and lamp working. However, enameling and working with copper captured me with the variety of techniques, the way colors can work together, and the “scienterrific” nature of enameling. I like to say that it is where science and art come together.
Please describe your work / product.
Woman Folk’s Jorien Brock is an enamel artist who has developed a unique approach to enameling, creating jewelry and sculptural art. First, copper is cut, formed, or worked to create distinctive shapes and to reflect the essence of the inspired form. Then, vitreous enamel powders are applied to the copper pieces and fired at about 1500 degrees until the glass fuses to the metal. Four to ten or more layers of enamel are applied to create the special colors, textures, and effects. Kiln-fired pieces are supplemented with handcrafted lamp-worked beads, semi-precious stones, leather, wood, sterling silver, reclaimed objects, and other findings to create unique art that captures the imagination. Many pieces are one-of-a-kind statement pieces, and all are designed to give voice to people’s unique sense of style.
